“Intro to self” - Who are you?  How would you describe yourself?  What do you want to accomplish in this class?  How do you want to grow and learn?


Unit 1 - Hosea


J1.  “God in the Old Testament” -  Write about your impressions and understanding of who God is as portrayed by the Old Testament writings.


J2. “ Law”  What is the purpose of law?  How can laws be positive and how can they be negative?


J3.  “Covenant”  What is the role and purpose of covenant?  What happens when we break covenant?  Give an example of a covenant in your life that has been kept or broken.

J4.  Read Deuteronomy 10:12-22 and list the key points in this passage.  Then, discuss the idea that God gives salvation before commandments.  Share a story where you experienced grace before law.



“Quiz 1”.  Refer to your notes, journals, and any other class activities to identify key things you learned and/or feel are significant that we have covered in class and why.  You should write on a minimum of four things with at least four solid paragraphs.


J5.  “Hosea”  Read Hosea chapters 1-3.  Why did God instruct Hosea to marry a prostitute and name his children such awful names?  What did Gomer do after having children?  How does God react to Israel's unfaithfulness?  What does God ask Hosea to do after Gomer leaves?  Why does Hosea buy Gomer back? What does this tell us about God?

J7.  “Listening to Warnings”  How do you know your relationship with God is good or not good?  Where have you found wisdom about God and about having a relationship with God?

J8. “Prophetic Voice” Reflect on your group’s poster: What did you do? Why did you choose the topic and expression? How can you more effectively reach your peers?

Unit 2 - David

J10: "Feeling or Choice" Read Jeremiah 17:9-10 and Ezekiel 11:19. Discuss whether love is a feeling or a choice. Discuss whether we can trust our hearts in making decisions and how do we change our hearts from stone to flesh.


J11:  "Peer Pressure" Read 1 Samuel 8 (together as a class) and discuss why Israel wanted a king.  Then discuss why we follow peer pressure today even when we know it is bad for us.  How can we resist negative peer pressure?


J12:  “Self Esteem”  Read 1 Samuel 13:1-15.  How can a teen build a strong self-image and/or self-esteem?  What helps one do this (e.g. home, friends, school, personal, etc.)?


J13:  “Reading Character”  Read 1 Samuel 16:1-13.  In what ways can you discern/read someone’s “heart/character?”


J14:  “Giants”  Read 1 Samuel 17.  Watch the short video on David and Goliath at:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDCU0hQV0Pk&list=PLp8TGcm9Ia6hB2-cP7EeEeNIypKjdc6nu&index=3 What “goliaths” do you have in your life right now?  How might you overcome them with God’s help - try to do a prayerful imagination of how it might work out.

J15:  “Jealousy”  Read 1 Samuel 18:1-16.  Describe several ways teens struggle with jealousy and provide ideas on how to work through jealousy.

J16:  Read 1 Samuel 20 about David and Jonathan's friendship.  Describe the modern "stereotypical" male/male friendship.  Describe what your idea of an ideal and biblical male friendship would look like.  Discuss how guys and girls can be non-romantic but still good friends.  Describe how we can find and develop good friendships.
Quiz 3:  Please describe four different “wisdoms” you learned from the story of Saul and David so far  using examples from the bible stories, your journals, the class notes, and projects (1-1.5 pages, 4 paragraphs minimum).  

J17:  Read 1 Samuel 18 about Saul consulting the witch of Endor.  Describe how you would counsel a friend struggling with their relationship with God.  Describe how you would counsel a someone about the dangers of spiritualism.  What does the battle for  your soul look like right now?  You may want to reference the verses from Ephesians 6:10-18.


J18:  Read the story of David’s confession in 2 Samuel 12 and Psalm 51.  What do we learn about David’s heart in this part of the story?  What do we learn about God’s heart in this story?  How would you describe true vs. false “confession”?

J19:  Read 1 Samuel 19 about Mical, David's wife lying so he could escape.  Discuss whether it is okay to tell a lie to preserve a life.  What are some of the possible outcomes, positive and negative, of telling a lie for a "good purpose."
J20:  Read 1 Samuel 24 and 25.  What can we learn from David about revenge?  how do you deal with situations that tempt to "take revenge?"

J21:  Read the story of David and his son Absalom in 2 Samuel 13-19.  Skim the chapters but focus on how David treats Amnon and Absalom in terms of love and discipline.  Critique David as a parent:  What did he do right or wrong in this story?  How can families work on being healthier and happier?

Quiz 4:  Please write a paragraph describing what you have learned during this unit about David’s heart and his relationship with God.

Unit 3 - Jesus

J22:  What do you want to learn, understand, or experience of Jesus in this unit?

J23:  What do you think Jesus was like as a teenager based on what we know of him at birth, age 12, and as an adult?

J24:  What do you admire, like, and love about Jesus?

J25:  What does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus?  What does it look like in real life?

J26: Discuss each beatitude in your group and rewrite them in your own words. Be practical and thorough and expand your writing to better explain common words and concepts.

J27: Why did Jesus choose disciples during his ministry? What are a couple of things you learned researching your disciple?

J28: What does it mean for a Christian to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world. How does that look in a teenagers life?

J29: What are some ways teens gossip; encourage gossip; hurt reputations? Be specific. How can teens discourage this practice?

J30: Discuss why people often live by an “eye for an eye.” What do you think Jesus meant by “do not resist an evil person?” What did he NOT mean? What is wisdom in loving your enemy? How can that go wrong? How do you actually accomplish this hard teaching? What are some practical steps?

J31: What is prayer? Why should someone pray? Based on the Lord’s prayer, what are some things we should pray for and why are they important?


Q5:  “Jesus”  Please write about four themes in this unit on Jesus that you found meaningful.  Explain with practical examples why you found them meaningful. Minimum 4 robust paragraphs and 1.5 pages.  Use journals, videos, project information.

J32: Talk about at least 3 stories told by other people in class that you appreciated and what insights you learned.

UNIT 4: Church

J33:  What is the purpose of church?  What makes church meaningful/effective?  What makes church irrelevant/damaging?

J34:  Read Acts 2:1-13.  Why do you think the Holy Spirit is represented as fire?  If you were watching, how would you know it was of God?

J35:  Read Acts 2:14-41.  Describe what you think it means when Acts says, "they were cut to the heart."  Give an example from your own life.

J36:  United Prayer: Watch the 30 minute video on United Prayer at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvMn9b9sJWc&index=1&list=PLp8TGcm9Ia6g562-fp_6T7qL-zqbXn6LQ.  Journal the following WHILE you watch: List the bible stories mentioned in the video that support prayer; as you watch, write down the questions you have about prayer; write how you think we can motivate young people to pray together in our church.

J37:  What is the gospel?  How should we share the gospel and how should we not share the gospel?

J38:  Read Acts 2:42-47 and Acts 4:32-37.  The early church model of sharing their belongings so no one is needy:  What do you think we can learn from this for our church today? Describe how you think this might work!

J39:  Read Acts 4:1-22.  Where do people get the courage and motivation to risk their lives for God?  What is the difference between courageous faith and religious fanaticism?

J40:  Read Acts 8:4-25; 16:16-40; 19:23-41.  These stories are about Simon Magus, the fortune-teller slave girl, and Demetrius the seller of idols.  Write at least three ways the values of the gospel and the kingdom of God go against contemporary teen culture.  How does this impact you personally?

Quiz 6 Write about four different parts of the movie we watched in class on Peter and Paul.  A minimum of four paragraphs and one page in your journal.
